Dual-use is the default now
The line between commercial and defense markets is dissolving. For frontier hardware founders, a dual-use pathway is no longer optional, it is strategy.
A few years ago, taking defense money was a debate inside many hard-tech startups. Today, dual-use is the default posture for serious physical-AI companies. The demand signal is enormous. Defense-tech leaders are now closing some of the largest rounds in the physical-AI category: this July alone, Helsing raised $1.8 billion and Quantum Systems raised $1.2 billion. Europe's rearmament plans could direct hundreds of billions more toward defense-related demand.
Government demand de-risks capital-intensive hardware. It anchors early revenue, funds the hardest R&D, and pulls commercial supply chains into existence. Companies that can serve both a defense customer and a commercial market enjoy a structural advantage: two demand curves underwriting one engineering investment.
Dual-use is also where founders get stuck. Procurement cycles, compliance regimes, export controls, and security requirements are their own discipline. Done wrong, they consume a young company. Done right, they become a moat that generalist competitors cannot cross.
