Hands are the hard part
Locomotion is largely solved. Manipulation is not. The current wave of dexterity breakthroughs, tendon-driven hands, tactile skin, teachable skills, is where the humanoid story gets real.
Walking made the highlight reels, but the economics of general-purpose robotics live in the hands. Most of the physical work worth automating is manipulation: picking, sorting, fastening, routing cables, handling the soft and irregular objects conventional automation never touched. Hand progress has been the inhibitor of the humanoid story, and this summer brought real movement.
1X unveiled a 25-degree-of-freedom, tendon-driven hand with low gear ratios that make every joint force-transparent and backdrivable: the hand feels what it touches instead of commanding blind positions, with tactile skin reading pressure and shear to catch a slipping object mid-slip. Demos run from picking individual screws to plugging in a USB-C charger, and a dedicated production line is already building hundreds of units with capacity for ten thousand a year. Tacta Systems unveiled a system built around teaching robots new dexterous skills rather than programming them.
The model layer is arriving at the same time. World-model architectures born in video generation are now running robots on automotive production lines, handling soft seals and cables with reaction times around 100 milliseconds on a single consumer-class GPU. Perception, touch, and control are converging into one trainable stack.
